What do Twitter’s New Rules Mean For You?

Twitter announced in February that it would be taking extra action against spam on the platform by introducing new rules.

These will change the way spam is monitored by the platform and apply specifically to multiple accounts and automation.

Accounts that fail to comply with these new rules will be suspended from Twitter, which is why it’s especially important for you to assess your Twitter strategy.

What the rules mean

These rules target repetitive posting of the same content on either one account or across a number of accounts.

This is usually the work of an automated spam bot, which is exactly what Twitter is trying to cut out of the platform. However, if you’re using a scheduling tool to automatically post the same tweet regularly, you’ll need to stop as there is no distinction between identical tweets posted manually or using an automation tool.

These types of posts don’t add value to users and are now a violation of Twitter’s rules.

The other rules covered in Yoel Roth’s blog post include posting multiple tweets on a trending topic and simultaneously liking, retweeting and/or following from multiple accounts.

What you can do about it

Don’t post the same content over a short space of time. In fact, even posting the same content over a month or two is sketchy, so it’s best to simply make sure your content is varied.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t talk about the same blog post multiple times, but it does mean you might have to get creative when it comes to posting about it.

Rather than posting the same text, link and image you should focus on different angles of the post and phrase your tweet in a different way.

For example, we might phrase a tweet about this post any of the following ways:

Relying on automated tweets could get you suspended from Twitter, the platform says

This is a simple rewrite of the same tweet, working from different angles to capture the attention of different audiences. And we promise it didn’t take us long at all!

You should also avoid posting the same content across multiple platforms, for example, the same tweet on your personal profile and your business profile. If you’d like to share the original tweet your best bet is to retweet the business tweet.

Getting creative with your tweets won’t just help you avoid Twitter suspension, it will make your posts more eye-catching and increase the likelihood of conversions. Definitely worth that little bit of extra effort.
