Storytelling on Twitter: 5 Ways to Craft a Compelling Tweet

When you enter the world of Twitter as a business, barely any of the shared content seems worthy of reading.

So much of it is repeated posts of sales and discounts, coupled with garishly coloured graphics and barely relevant hashtags littered throughout. And usually, it’s these tweets that customers see right through.

That’s why when it comes to crafting your own Twitter content, you should make sure you stand out from the crowd and don’t scare off your audience with banal and dreary tweets that simply shout about your products.

Instead, you should add value to the platform by writing compelling tweets that encourage follows, engagement and potential leads to your site. If you’re struggling to get your tweets together, here are five ways you can craft a compelling story in 280 characters.

1. Evoke emotion

The first way to make a start on getting your tweets to stand out is to plan to evoke an emotion from the reader.

This might seem cold and calculated, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s not a case of making them cry or laugh to make using Twitter worth your while, but it’s important to realise just how emotion can drive the need to like or retweet.

The best way to approach using this is to consider your business’ mission. Is there something universal there that you know people will identify with? If there is it makes sense to talk about it and raise awareness – while also raising awareness for your brand too.

2. Don’t mask the obvious

Another way to encourage people to engage with your profile is to be genuine.

If you’re a business your followers know it, so there’s no point in acting like you’re not trying to sell them something. One example of this is Innocent’s account. They know just what they are and they don’t try to hide it, in fact, they make a joke out of it so it becomes funny and is shared even more widely.

There’s no point trying to smooth over the fact you’re a company trying to sell something. If you’re passionate about what you’re selling then there’s no reason other people won’t be too!

3. Be original

Originality on Twitter is key. It’s what the platform is about, and if you couple it with a quick wit then you’ve got a winning combination.

There’s no point copying what everyone else is doing as you’ll be called out straight away and will lose the credibility you gained. Instead, you should work to come up with tweets that align with your business mission and that tell people about it in a new and fresh way, so to start a new conversation.

4. Share a personal moment

Another way to get your business more active on Twitter is to use it to share the behind the scenes moments that make your company seem more human.

This might be a move to a new space or getting ready for your launch. It could be something as simple as someone at the company’s birthday – there are no restrictions!

Personal moments like this will make your brand more accessible to followers and can help add to your brand’s personality.

5. Avoid a rewrite

We’ve briefly mentioned that you should do your best to be original but there’s another point to make here – do not copy other people’s tweets.

There’s an ever so slight difference in copying someone’s tweet verbatim and copying the format of it and because it’s such a fine line to walk it’s best that you avoid it all together.

By lifting someone’s tweet you’re not only taking credit for something that isn’t yours, you’re putting out a message to potential customers, that you’re not genuine.
